Hello readers!

Have you ever received an email attachment that you couldn’t open and found that it was “.DAT” file?

I have, and it’s a real pain. I was just helping an NNRMLS Member figure out how to open one of these .DAT, or data files, and I found a great little free tool that allowed me to do so!

It’s called WinMail Opener and you can get it here: http://download.cnet.com/Winmail-Opener/3000-2369_4-10469892.html

Once you download it to your computer, you just open it, then click on the “open file” link. Check out the screen shot below of what this looks like:

After that the program will ask you to navigate to the file you want to open. Once you pick the file the program opens it in a readable format and will allow you to save it as a .RTF file, which was developed by Microsoft, and provided you have some version of Word on your computer, you’ll be able to open it and share it.

A couple of definitions for you:

1. .DAT file (from About.com): A file with the DAT file extension is a Data file. Other types of files that use the DAT extension include VCD video files and some email program file attachments. You might also see a DAT file alongside a DLL file. These DAT files might be simple help files or might be necessary for the DLL, and associated program, to work properly.
2. .RTF file, or Rich Text Format file, (from wikipedia): The Rich Text Format (often abbreviated RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation since 1987 for Microsoft products and for cross-platform document interchange.

There you have it! Now you can open .DAT file!

Make it a great day!
