Cyber Security

When was the last time we had a chat about Security?

Nobody likes to think their laptop will be stolen. Nobody expects to forget their phone in a coffee bar or other public place, learning later it was picked up by someone else. In all honesty, we take for granted the information on our devices is secured from unwanted eyes.

NNRMLS provides an abundance of mobile applications and utilities for agents that allow you to complete signings, pull listing information, or even take a quick photo and pull parcel information or sale history on a property (quick wink and nod to the newly launched Homesnap app). These applications also harbor sensitive information such as client contact, transaction details, signed documents, and/or legal papers. It is in your best interest and your clients to keep this data secure.

NNRMLS policy also covers this within the MLS Subscriber agreement and the Rules and Regulations as a citable offense, yikes!

Of course, there is no 100% protection when it comes security; but there are steps we can take to mitigate, if not prevent, and protect our personal and work data.

What is the best course of action for securing your mobile device(s)?

There is a myriad of security settings across mobile devices today that will help protect you and your clients’ information.

Modern mobile devices from phones, to tablets, and laptop pcs allow for setting device security in many ways. Some include:

  • login patterns
  • login pins
  • passwords
  • biometrics
  • voice and facial recognition software

So, which one is best practice?

The one that you are most likely to use is the best! Depending on your work practices and what you feel comfortable with, even the simple use of a pin is a great deterrent and a step in the right direction for security.

Some of the benefits of locking and securing your device(s) include:

  • If your phone/tablet is lost or stolen
  • Peace of mind for you and your clients
  • Safety of your own personal information and contacts

Cons: (Since more than likely you are using your own personal device)

  • The inconvenience of locking and logging into your device

If you have any questions about setting up securities on your devices give us a call or stop by our office to ask tech support. We are more than willing to assist and help you be safer in your profession.
